Ascent Trip ReportI've had my eye on Adams Mountain for a long time. From US321 south of Blowing Rock, it is a recognizable "pointy" peak in the valley to the southwest. It has a steep southeastern face and its summit ridge is perpendicular to the viewpoints on 321, which gives it the pointy appearance similar to Table Rock on the horizon further west.
The one previous time I visited, hunters were at the trailhead, so I passed by. Best to schedule your hike outside of hunting season.
Adams Mountain is a 4.7-mile roundtrip hike. If you have a mountain bike, most of the route is rideable. From the Collettsville crossroads west of Lenoir, take Adako Road 2 miles west, and turn right onto Murphy Place, a gravel road which heads northwest. After 1 mile, turn right onto Forest Road 187, which is called Maple Sally Road (and on some maps is labeled Maple Grove Church Road). Follow this road 4 miles and park at the gated FR 4079 on the left. Hike up the road for 0.5 miles to a T intersection in the gap between Adams Mountain and Loose Mountain. Turn left, where the road is signed 4079B. Continue to the left when you pass the signed 4079A on the right. From the T junction, it's 0.8 miles to the end of the forest road, which gets you almost to the spot elevation 2295. At the end of the road, look for a mountain-bike path on the left side of the cul-de-sac. This will take you over 2295 as well as two more rocky knolls along the ridgeline. The bike trail is not signed or blazed but is easy to follow all the way to the peak. The last quarter-mile is fairly steep. The summit has lots of boulders, including a crawl-through cave under the top rock. Nice views to the east. Bring your own water--there are no dependable springs along the trail.
