Ascent Trip Report

dad's report
We drove past a speed-trap up to the dirt parking lot at the far east end of Speedway Blvd in Tucson to access the Douglas Spring Trailhead. I checked out the trail on the north side of Speedway, which went over Tanque Verde Ranch property, but the gate was locked and marked "no tresspassing." Hence, we decided to take the well-marked, Douglas Spring Trail on the south side of Speedway going into Saguaro National Park (Eastern Unit). It was near sunset, so, in a hurry, I didn't see the sign stating an entrance permit was required, but it didn't seem to matter, and I had a Golden Eagle Passport in any case, just not displayed on the car. We followed the nice Douglas Spring Trail until my device showed Scotts Knob north of us and we found a side trail with a row of rocks across it. It led down to a wash with a gate through a barbed wire fence on the other side. The lock on the gate was open, so we continued toward the obvious high knob following a trail that horses had worn down a couple feet, so it was like walking in a narrow trench. Not much farther, we found a less-used side trail going up to the top, where we watched the sun drop toward the horizon, before heading back the way we came. A few rabbits watched us leave their feeding grounds.
