Ascent Trip Report

Entered 12/12/2019.

A sort of spontaneous hike to the Wildcats with Matt! Signed up on Team App a couple of days ago and before I knew it I was on the road at 6AM. We started hiking around 10:30AM. The parking lot was not plowed at Glen Ellis Falls so we parked on Route 16. We had a few issues to start. Two of the five of us got one of their feet and lower leg submerged in the Ellis River. They recovered well, so we cautiously continued. Another person was in jeans, but he had no issues during the hike. We really have to start doing pre-meetings with new people, even for these day hikes. Matt was the official leader but it ended up being a co-lead which was fun. The two who got their feet wet didn't have all that many layers and were cold as we got higher. If this were any kind of overnight trip, we would have definitely turned around, not to mention even started knowing what some people were wearing. We pressed up the steep Wildcat Ridge Trail/Appalachian Trail towards Wildcat E and D. We knew early on that we would not make it to Wildcat A, especially if we had to get back down the steep trail. It was steep and a bit technical, but descending would have been worse. There were a few small ledges to traverse and some scrambling. We made it to Wildcat E and D and had great views. We decided to take a longer route distance wise and hike down the ski trails and Route 16. We walked down the Upper Catapult, Middle Wildcat, and Cheetah trails. We were confronted by a Ski Patrol member who informed us most hikers descend the ski trails on the opposite side of the main chairlift, but let us continue the way we were going. We made really good time, covering twice the distance in the same time it took to go up. Got back to the car around 3:30PM, campus by 7:00PM. A long drive for sure.
