Ascent Trip Report

Access: Others have reported that the road up to the summit is gated, so I decided to just go straight up the east slope. I parked at the lower parking area in Sentinel Peak Park because for some reason the road to the upper parking area is closed only on Mondays. The top of Tumamoc Hill is fenced off, so public access is restricted. Therefore, proceed at your own risk.

The Climb: I immediately crossed a wash and began making my way up the slope, dodging cacti and brush as I went. This is probably the bare minimum I would call a bushwhack because I only had to go through brush a few times. Otherwise it was lots of tall grass and loose rocks, with at most some brief class 2 to avoid brush. About halfway up I came across an old and dilapidated barbed wire fence, which had collapsed so I could step right over it. Once I got to the summit area, I quickly tagged the high point by the observatory and made my way back down. On the way down I contoured further south as I intended to hike up Sentinel Peak next. I eventually found a trail which took me around to the road at the saddle between Tumamoc Hill and Sentinel Peak. I didn't see anyone else on the mountain during my time there.

My Thoughts: I was feeling under the weather and slept in very late, but I didn't want to waste the whole day, so I figured I could bag Tumamoc Hill and Sentinel Peak before sunset. It was nice to get outside, but this wasn't a very fun peak to bag. The cross country travel was tedious with lots of loose rock and I had to stealth the high point. Not really recommended unless you don't have time to get outside of Tucson.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so if you are based in or around northern Idaho feel free to contact me.
