Ascent Trip Report

Access: Wasson Peak is within Saguaro National Park, so there is a fee to climb it, which can be payed at the nearby Red Hills Visitor Center. The King Canyon trailhead is on N Kinney Road across from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and is accessed by paved roads. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon and got the last good parking space, so be aware that it may be full on weekend afternoons.

The Climb: From the King Canyon trailhead I followed the wide King Canyon trail, which reaches a wash in about a mile. The trail circumvents the wash to the west, but I just followed the wash until it converged with the trail again. Upon exiting the wash, there are two trail options: the King Canyon Trail (left) and the Sweetwater Trail (right). Both will get you to Wasson Peak, but the King Canyon Trail is 0.7 miles shorter each way. Eventually these two trails converge on a saddle and the trail to Wasson Peak switchbacks up a ridge to the west. Follow the trail another mile to the summit, where there was a register stand, but I couldn't find a benchmark.

My Thoughts: This was a great afternoon hike after driving from Las Vegas down to Tucson and a great introduction to southern Arizona. The trail was well-maintained and the giant saguaro cacti were quite impressive. The views from the top were expansive and every range within 100 miles was visible. With Wasson Peak I was able to check off both a P2k and a National Park, so it was a nice two for one.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
