Ascent Trip ReportSky Rock is on the California Coastal List, and on public land, so it was only a matter of time before I got to it. Dean had climbed it previously but agreed to give it another go. The rock is an obvious dark monolith about 100 feet high, rising straight out of the slope. We drove the very short distance from our parking spot for High Glade and started downhill. On Dean’s previous attempt, this section had been a bad bushwhack, but after the 2018 fire it was easy going. As we started uphill again, we angled to the right to a notch in the rock, scrambling over volcanic talus. Here we turned left and continued to ascend. I initially took a chute too far to the left that ended below a sheer face up to the summit. I retreated down to where Dean identified the correct chute, a steep, somewhat mossy slope to the right of the one I had taken. This was class 3, but not too bad to climb. On the lower section there are good footholds, and then there are a few moves above that take some concentration and handholds. It’s an easy scramble from there to the top. There was no register, and we had forgotten to bring one. We descended very slowly down the chute and returned to the car.
