Ascent Trip Report

A long trek into the south hills. I started at the Third Fork trail head and went up third fork to "the spot"--a very nice picnic table in the woods. I followed a really solid single track, one of the best I've ever seen, up Telephone Canyon. It connected back with a road, which continued up the canyon. I saw four eagles feasting on a deer carcass. I am pretty sure they were juvenile bald eagles, because they didn't seem large enough to be golden eagles. Either way, it was a great experience. One flew within 15 feet of me. I continued up the road, which led up to the area around Trapper Peak. I followed a rough track up to the summit, and then headed over to the top of Third Fork again. I started bushwhacking down to the road that dead ends up Third Fork, and then I stumbled on a different road that isn't on the topo map I studied before going to the area. That was a nice surprise. This road took me right down to the main road that runs down third fork. I followed third fork down a ways, almost to Telephone Canyon, where I left it. Prior to that junction, I headed off on a different road that hooks around a ridge and heads over to Porcupine Springs. That road too me to Little Fork, which I descended to Trail Canyon. I climbed up trail canyon, because who doesn't love a 1000 foot climb 17 miles into a hike? I found the Wahlstrom Winter Loop trail, which I took to Wahlstrom Hollow, and followed that road down to the beaver ponds, and then down the hollow back to the Third Fork trail head. It was a tough day. I didn't eat enough food the night prior, and the fruit based energy I brought along wasn't cutting it. I needed some more substantial food, apparently.
