Ascent Trip ReportHad wanted to do this hike for a while but the reviews mentioned class 4 moves, which scarred my wife away. My friend from grad school, Dave Paralee was in town and was game to do it. The weather looked a bit sketch, but we went for it anyway.
The road out to the trailhead is dirt for several miles and the last half mile to the trailhead really requires an SUV or similar high-clearance vehicle.
The trail starts out heading uphill for about 0.4 miles and circumvents cabezon counter clockwise as a class 1 trail. The trail then turns left and begins ascending the Cabezon as a class 2 scramble mixed in with a few class 3 moves if you so desire. The crux of the climb is a class 3+ scramble up a chute - there's maybe 10 vertical feet of climbing with little exposure. Once on top of the shoot, there are a few easy class 3 moves on sort of a knife edge. Past this - it's all a class 2 to 2= scramble to the summit.
The summit area is marked with a wind barrier and there is a summit registry. While we were enjoying our summit beers and the awesome, quintessential NM landscape, we could see virga clouds approaching. Not wanting to descent the tricky parts in the rain, we started the descent.
We lucked out - it stayed fairly dry and then started opening up as soon as we hit the class 1 trail. This is an awesome hike and we saw only one other party at the shoot on our ascent.
