Ascent Trip ReportOver the many times I have driven along the TCH between Riviere-du-Loup and Quebec City, it's hard not to notice the mountains in this region, particularly Montagne à Coton, which is right alongside the south side of the highway at Saint-Pascal. On this trip, I specifically made plans to hike it and another one nearby.
Take exit 465 for Saint-Pascal, QC and you'll find the trailhead and a parking area along the Rang 2 road. Much of the ~2 km trail has wooden steps, making the hike up pretty easy for most. It only took me 10 minutes to reach the observation deck at the summit and once there, you are rewarded with a nice 360 degree view of the area.
At one time, the mountain used to be known as Montagne Pointue, but was re-named some decades ago. It is officially open between May 15-Oct 15, but I've noticed snowshoe tracks in the snow during winter months, so evidently it's getting some use year-round. However, the parking area is not ploughed, so you would have to find elsewhere to park. (There is a John Deere retailer across the road, so if asked, they might give you permission to park somewhere in their lot.)
