Ascent Trip ReportI didn't know much about this peak prior to driving out there. Basically, I spotted it on a map and thought that's in the direction I want to go and I bet I could tag it before dark. It turned out that, that it's a scenic mountain that's quite a bit west of the Cascade Crest. There is a legacy of mining in the area and a labyrinth of forest service roads.
Google and Summitpost both sent me up via Sharps Creek Road. 4WD isn't necessary, but clearance and some familiarity with driving rough roads is. That route up is county maintained, and it's a fantastic road to a BLM campground a couple of miles past the end of the pavement. But, after that, it climbs steadily and is rocky. Two or three times I stopped just to consider my angles before committing. I ended up descending via the east side to OR-138, and the forest service roads were great. While I'm sure it's more distance from I-5, the easiest way up NF-22 and NF-2213.
I parked in the rather large saddle, and make the quick hike up the maintained trail to the summit. I had great views of Thielsen, Diamond, and the Sisters all illuminated by the setting sun. After I had my fill, I descended back to the saddle before the sun had fully set. Since I was so close, I decided to add Fairview peak as well. The gate was locked, but it was a straight forward ascent with my bike.
