Ascent Trip Report

Most of the route is shaded, which was a pleasant surprise. Other than the persistent clouds of gnats/black flies, Joe and I were amply prepared. We each carried 5-6L of water because we played it safe by assuming Chokecherry would have no water left. Chokecherry actually still had ample water, and we each only drank around 3L by the end of the day. We finished way faster than expected.

We camped out at the gate/trailhead the night before. Temps dropped close to freezing. Very chilly in the morning. Once the sun started coming up, it warmed quickly. Wonderfully pleasant temps and clear skies all day long.

The prior weekend I did a 23mi and +1000ft mountain bike ride as a warmup. Glad I did. The uphill sections got steep at times. But boy were the downhill sections a blast! In the last few miles to the trailhead, my GPS clocked me at close to 30mph. As someone who only bikes once or twice a year, doing 30mph with only a helmet felt like 40% terror 60% excitement.
