Ascent Trip Report

Met my brother and nephew the night before and we stayed in Curry Village. We had all been meaning to hike this for a while, but we could never coordinate schedules & lottery permits during the summer while the cables were up. So, I brought along harnesses, b'ners, slings, prussics and we were ready for the cables being down.

30 - Alarm goes off. We are prepared, grab our stuff and head out after some quick b'fast. We move our cars to the hiker's parking lot.
10 - Depart the hikers parking lot. We head up the mist trail in the dark.
07 - Vernal falls (starting to get light)
47 - First view of half dome to our left - perfectly lit in the morning sun.
20 - Subdome. We put harnesses and gear on. There are ~6 people on the cables ascending ahead of us. I give my brother and nephew a quick lesson on safety and usage of the gear.
35 - Up we go.
20 - Summit! (4:10 up). There are 2 groups of 6-8 people on the summit. I think we are the first to arrive from the trailhead (they others camped along the trail). We spend ~40 mins on the summit eating lunch, taking pics and enjoying the beautiful day. It's t-shirt weather, blue sky, not a puff of wind, and hardly anyone there. Amazing.
00 - We head down. I'm hoping to catch a red-eye from San Fran at 9pm. The race is on. :-) There are lots people arriving at the cables now. We quickly descend and get off to get out of the way. We take the mist trail down, the same way we came up. There are now 100's (maybe 1,000) people hiking the lower mist trail..
54 - Back at the car - done. (2:54 down).
