Ascent Trip Report

Ryan Mountain, Peak 5295, Peak 5194, Lost Horse Benchmark, Lost Horse Mountain, Keys View and Mount Inspiration

10/26/19
Total distance: 18.8 miles
Elevation gain: 3000 ft according to my GPS, 4100 ft as estimated by me
Total time: 10 hours, 38 minutes
Start time: 7:05am
Trailhead: Lost Horse Loop trailhead, 0.6 miles down Lost Horse Mine dirt road, which is 2 miles down Keys View Road
Accomplishments by list: HPS #55, #56 and #57

Difficulty of hike: 7 out of 10. A lot of hiking over flat ground. Most of the ascents were short, even though there were a bunch of them. The most difficult part is good route finding skills for the off trail portions.

Views during hike: 7 out of 10. The best were on Lost Horse Mountain and Lost Horse Mine, looking east towards Malapai Hills. Lost of cool rock formations to be seen. Ryan Mountain views were good too, looking west over Quail Mountain towards San Gorgonio. Keys View was nice, but Mount Inspiration left me uninspired.

Ascent during the descent: numerous extra ascents throughout the hike. Ten high points reached by my count. Yet most of these extra ascents were fairly short.

People seen on the trail: No one between the TH and Ryan Campground. Lots of campers at the campground, then no one until the summit of Ryan. There were 3 people at the summit same time I was there. After that, no one seen until the main trail to Lost Horse. There were 10-20 people in the area of the Lost Horse Mine, none of which climbed Lost Horse Mountain as I did. After that, a group of 5 on the Lost Horse Loop, then no one else until Keys View. Lots of people at Keys View. After that, a group of 10, followed by a group of 4, on the way to the first false summit of Mount Inspiration, then no one until the summit of Mount Inspiration, where a gentleman was fixing an antenna. After that, still lots of people at Keys View, then no one the rest of the way.

Animals seen: About 5-10 rabbits, significantly less than in the Geology Tour Road area from last week. One green snake, about 1-2 feet long, on the northern slopes of Lost Horse Mountain. Then a bighorn sheep, about 1/4th of a mile from the summit of Mount Inspiration. The first bighorn sheep I've seen in my days hiking SoCal.

This was a hike where I put together many trails and off trail routes. From the Lost Horse parking area, I took the Big Trees Trail for 2.2 miles to Ryan Campground. Then I followed HPS Route 3 up to the summit of Ryan. From there, I took Lost Horse HPS Route 2, over Peak 5295 (added by me) and Peak 5194, to the "old pipeline". The section south of Peak 5194 marked as "steep" by HPS wasn't that bad. But once it says to follow the pipeline, that should be followed. I made the mistake of trying to reach another visible trail, but that forced me to descend and climb back an extra 200 feet. Stick with the pipeline, even if it doesn't look like the best path.

Once I reached the main trail to Lost Horse, I climbed to the false peak (aka Lost Horse Mine or Lost Horse Benchmark) before realizing that the true peak is further south. There were great views to be had at the false peak, but equally great views on the true peak. From there, I took the longer portion of Lost Horse loop south and west, until I went off trail just before the 4800 contour. From there, it was 1.5-2 miles to Keys View Road, then another 3/4 mile to Keys View.

The climb to Mount Inspiration is trickier than expected because you have to go over 2 false peaks (though apparently one is called South Inspiration, which I did not summit). If you drive to Keys View, it shouldn't be a challenge to summit, but it's not so easy on the 15th mile of the hike.
