Ascent Trip Report

Being from Oregon I have a hard time believing that I hadn't climbed this before but it is an easy one to put off. If you want to do it in three days you need an ambitious party because it is quite a long trek. We did it a five day excursion including the drive from Portland. We hiked into the guard station in the afternoon upon arrival in the car then on to Glacier Meadows the second day. On the way out we did the same which worked out quite well, then drove home to my family's place. We had a long 20 hour summit day so I would advise an early start. We were quite slow but others were taking 15 plus hours as well. The hike along the moraine before dropping down to Blue Glacier will not be forgotten and the overall experience is varied and spectacular. We were slowed down by the summit pinnacle, overthinking the route finding. If you just start up near the center the way will become evident, we veered over to the left as we approached the peak. Overall the glaciers didn't pose much of a problem except two large crevasses ascending to Crystal Pass but one had a solid bridge and the other we were able to go around with about a 10 minute detour. The latest peak in nearly 50 years of climbing with my Uncle and one of several in Northern Washington. Oh, and the first time we came up here and it didn't rain. The weather could not have been better.
