Ascent Trip ReportWe did this one in the dark after Oregon Canyon Mountains Peak. That wasn't the original plan, but we arrived later than expected. Since the forecast was for additional snow overnight, we decided to do the hike immediately rather than wait until morning. This proved to be a good choice, as the road was impassable the next day. Early in the day, there had been a snowstorm that was not in the forecast. In most places, there was less than an inch of snow on the road, but there were a few minor, rutted drifts on the road to Wildhorse Lake Viewpoint. We eventually came to a place where the road was completely covered with drifts as far as we could see, with no tire tracks, so we stopped there and made the short hike to the top. Although it wasn't snowing, it was 25°F. and the wind was quite strong in places. We did see boot tracks that must have been made in the past few hours, since the drifting snow had not yet covered them.
Upon reaching the summit, we hit all of the highest points, and then hurried back to the car. We descended to South Steens Campground and spent the night there. |
