Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Jason Park, Mat Kelliher
This trip was Jason Park's I-Provisional backpack. We came in Saturday via the Cottonwood Springs trail and summited Mastodon Peak and then headed east to where we set up camp (about 2.5 miles from the TH). Sunday we hiked to the high point of the Eagle Mtns, then returned to camp, packed up and out. The route up from camp is pretty straight forward; a bit steep going up from the base of the mountain near camp to the mesa, from there the gain is steady and follows the ridgelines to the closed contour at 5160. Descending from 5160 down to the saddle is brushy and rocky and the route difficult to find; the route up for the ascent of this area on the return is much more simple because it's easier to see the way. The going is much less rocky and brushy from the saddle to the high point.
Total mileage for the trip was 11.7 RT miles with 3,100' of gain. It took us two hours to get to camp on Saturday. Sunday it took us about 3.5 hours to get to the summit, about 3 hours to get back to camp then about 1.5 hours to pack out.
