Ascent Trip ReportMy girlfriend and I decided to hike the Franconia Ridge Trail using the Old Bridle Path to Falling Water loop. This was our first hike of the season. We stayed at Waterest Campground the night before, had breakfast in Lincoln, and reached the trailhead at 8:30 AM. Despite it being sunny when we were at breakfast, clouds rolled in once we'd been hiking for an hour or so.
We took the Old Bridle Path up to Greenleaf Hut, where we refilled our water and took a brief break. It was very foggy above treeline. Once we reached the summit the wind really picked up, and it was chilly. We quickly made our way across the ridge because of the threat of worse weather. It started drizzling near Little Haystack, but abated soon after we started our descent. We stopped for lunch at the intersection with Shining Rock Trail.
The trail down was rocky and slick, but the weather held up until about 1.5 miles from the end, when it started raining lightly. Overall it took us 6.25 hours, and was a nice hike despite the less than ideal weather. We did the ridge again with friends a few weeks later.
