Ascent Trip ReportI wanted to do some peaks in the Yosemite area but didn't want to pay the park entrance fee. Conness' east ridge seemed like a nice quick scramble, and I figured I could do Dana later in the day.
There are many spur roads and trails through the campground, and finding my way to the proper trail was non-trivial. GPS helped. After a few miles, I left the trail and ascended to Alpine Lake. This is mostly easy cross-country, though my routedinding wasn't ideal, and I ended up in a few minor brushy/marshy sections. Alpine Lake is beautiful. I hopped talus around the NE side of the lake, then continued talus-hopping up to the 11800' saddle in Conness' E ridge. The altitude really started kicking my ass above 12k, and my pace slowed to crawl as I made my way up the class 2 scree slopes of the E ridge to the flat area just E of the summit.
The final scramble of the E ridge was short and fun. Barely any class 3, a little exposure in spots but overall quite easy. It looks like there were even rock stairs installed in places. Good views to Dana, Lyell, Tuolumne Meadows, Half Dome, etc. On the descent I felt immediately better after I dropped below 12k, and was back to my normal self by the time I got to Alpine Lake. Back to the TH and then on to Dana for the afternoon.
