Ascent Trip Report

West Goat Peak East Access

Don’t be intimidated by the routes’ steep appearance from Warren Lake. You will be mostly traveling a class 2 with intermittent class 3 to the top. Very little to no exposure.

From Warren lake take head south on trail 130 to the top of the pass. It’s only about a quarter mile or so. Then head east and stay on the ridge through timber and boulders (about a half mile), following the rolling ridge up until West Goat comes into view. You will find yourself in a flat shaded area just below the tree line. Once you get to the edge of this you will switch back up to the crux- which is a class 3 climb to another flat bouldering walk up to the final pitch (another class 3) up to the summit. Hold as close to the ridge as you feel comfortable at this point until you summit. The ridge starts East but does veer south about a mile or so from the top. The views are amazing, we could spot the Bitterroot Mountains, the Tobacco Root Mountains, the Pioneers, Lady of the Rockies and the rest of the Pintler Range. You will enjoy an overall fun and not overly technical peak bagging experience!

On the way back down you will be tempted to go left. This is a mistake as it looks gentle but then quickly drops into a cliff. Stay to the right- the way you came!

Also if camping at Warren Lake: do yourself a favor and follow the north path around the lake to find the best (little known) campsite located on the North west corner shoreline. If you find a fire pit burned out of a stump, you’ll know you’re there!
