Ascent Trip Report

Got up at 5:30AM looking to leave the house by 6:00M for the drive across the LA basin. About 5:45 I checked on Google Maps and it indicated the drive would take 1 hour, 44 minutes. Excellent ! Except that the actual drive time was more like two and half hours, not including stops for gas and snacks for the hike. As such it was that I stepped off from the trailhead parking lot at 9:00AM, the Tacoma being the only vehicle there. The trail goes up hill almost right away at about a 10% grade and continues so without a break for the next three and three quarters miles, at which point it levels out for about a half mile before returning to the same up hill grade. I stopped for lunch at the overlook just west of Henry Washington monument, as the views were said to be better there than on the summit. After lunch I rolled over to the summit proper where I was pleasantly pleased to discover I had cell phone service, so I gave Deni a call. Took a few pictures and enjoyed the views of Mt. San Gorgonio, Mt San Jacinto, and Big Bear Lake before heading back down the trail. On the drive back to the freeway I passed by the Mill Creek Cattle Company, a restaurant that had been well reviewed on a KCVS-PBS television show we recently watched, so I stopped in for a bite to eat. Wasn't overly impressed: the portions were generous and fairly priced, the service was good, but the food itself was, well, "meh" as our niece's husband - New Jersey born and raised - would say.

The "IV" apparently refers to San Bernardino being the 4th of the SoCal Six Peak Challenge (2019-10-02). Photo by Ray Thompson.
