Ascent Trip Report

We attempted this in order for Beckie to make progress on the NV COHP list. We stayed in nearby Eureka, and got up early and drove in. The road is fine past Newark Summit saddle junction and on to the first gate by Poison Spring stock tank. We made it 0.2 to the next one, which is commonly open and dropped on the ground and not noted by visitors. We immediately slammed on the brakes about 20' up from here. Huge washed out gully down the center of the road, about 3' deep and 1-2' wide. Not possible to straddle it safely. I walked up and it seemed to go about 1/4 mile up towards the final stock tank where I had parked years ago. Not happening. Not possible to avoid it on either side, as sage brush is too dense. We turned back due to needing to make time homewards that day, and due to having hiked the lengthy albeit mellow Snow Valley Peak the day before and Beckie not feeling up to a full day hike from this spot.

I do not know if the BLM (not USFS) is considering fixing this road; I doubt it. Must have been a huge gully washer rain storm this year. One of the biggest washouts I have ever seen. We will return some year with a full day to use to climb it the extra mile or so from lower down.
