Ascent Trip Report

Note our GPS track with distance and gain are a little higher than they should be as we missed a turn and headed down the wrong path for a distance and had to hike back. This happened because we were debating geologic features in the rock on the trail and the sign is mounted backwards (ooooops park service) and it can only be read in the opposite direction so be careful at that junction. THe trip should be less than 3000 feet of gain and we ended up with darn near 3k.

The road up to he saddle and parking is easy 2 wheel drive can make it. Parking plentiful with a bathroom and the trails is easy up to the shoulder of the route. From there it is braided and cairns to the top through a ton of talus. But the scree is manageable and not bad compared to many other peaks. The geology is crazy. Sandstones, conglomerates, basalts, granites and other igneous rock with a lot of green sheen and places were hornblende is in super large fibrous crystals. The juxtaposition of mega conglomerate to igneous fine rock to large pegmatites is abrupt displaying what happens when sedimentary rock is cracked and invaded by igneous molten rock. The dike in the area radiating out like spokes from the large mastiff is unique like nothing I have ever seen. One dike looks like the great wall of china!

Grabbing the east peak from the summit would be a major deal as the prominence saddle drop goes all the way back to timber line and below. Will come back and grab that one some other day
You must go and see the dikes up close! Amazing geologic area
