Ascent Trip Report

Access: From Highway 95, turn east onto Blacktail Road and follow it until it takes a 90 degree right turn. At this turn, NF-230 heads off to the left. Follow NF-230 until its end at the trailhead. The road is dirt and a bit rough, but it was fine for a sedan when I visited.

The Climb: There are two trails beginning at this trailhead and you want trail 117, which is the one further to the north and labelled "Blacktail Trail". Follow this steep, but well maintained trail to an unsigned junction just before the ridge. At the junction, take a right and follow the trail along the ridge to the rocky summit. If you are worried about missing the junction, follow Eric Noel's GPS track (which also helpfully has the driving route). The trail has obviously been rerouted a few times. For the easiest hike and to prevent erosion, follow the well-defined switchbacks.

My Thoughts: This was a pleasant hike along a nice trail. Views of Lake Pend Oreille from the summit are supposedly excellent, but I was stuck in a thick cloud on the summit. Oh well. Still nice to bag another P2k.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so if you are based in or around northern Idaho feel free to contact me.
