Ascent Trip ReportPat Arredondo, John Radalj and I hiked to Samon on Oct 3.
It had been seven years since I had been there, and I was not at all confident in my route finding. Pat and I had checked out the lower section from the road two months ago and could see that it was severely overgrown. This past winter definitely kicked up the growth.
Bottom line, it took us 7 1/2 hours RT from the road below Chokecherry. 5 1/2 hrs hiking and 2 hrs stopped. The Lower section was relatively easy to follow, but overgrown, and we clipped all the way to the ridge. This took extra time and we stopped clipping when we gained the ridge.
Major overhead growth was encountered as we approached the meadow. Severe bushwhacking down to the meadow, and then we scouted the best way back. It looked like all the way to the low end of the meadow, and then side hill to the ridge would work. This turned out to be best. Sporadic trail over the bumps with some route finding detours required to the summit.
On the way back we could see an open area and trail toward the upper end of the meadow, initially through brush, and then clear up to the ridge. I led the way up there, but the ridge was totally brushed in down to the viable trail. Big mistake, I bushwhacked down the ridge, but Pat and John went back to the meadow and the bottom corner to sidehill to the ridge. They were back on track well before I caught up. It would be difficult to spot this track on the way in because the normal trail continues in pretty good shape. Easy from there back down, but I continued trimming.
Follow Pat Arredondo's GPS track, and take the northern most track when approaching the Meadow. This seems to be the best track to avoid major bushwhacking.
