Ascent Trip ReportFrom Lafayette Campground, we took the Old Bridle Path to the AMC Greenleaf hut (4200ft). About 1.5 miles in, the forest gave way to some stunning look-outs of the notch and the three peaks. Upon reaching the hut, it was a nice surprise to find free, hearty whole-wheat pancakes. After a relatively fast climb to the hut, the food and break gave many of us a much-needed second wind. We then proceeded up Greenleaf Trail to the peak of Lafayette.
From the very windy and cool summit, we trekked across the Franconia ridge over Lincoln and Little Haystack. For about 2.5 miles, the ridge afforded spectacular, constant 360 degree views of the White Mountains. The Presidential Range was clearly visible to the northeast, with Mt. Washington summit protruding into the clouds. We enjoyed lunch at a nook somewhere around Lincoln, then had a fun time scrambling and climbing up some large, steep-walled rocks which supported us above a very steep drop down the west side of the ridge.
After arriving at Little Haystack, we proceeded down the Falling Waters Trail. Along the way, we made a detour to the enormous "Shining Rock", then ascended back to the Falling Waters trail to resume our descent. Some very cool waterfalls along the way.
Phenomenal trip. |
