Ascent Trip ReportI had contemplated summitting via the north side of the peak, as such I parked much further north than where I actually ended up making my ascent. The walk south was through sage and grass, the grass was notorious for depositing seeds inside my socks and shoes, making for an annoying and irritating walk. However, I found a spot where I made my ascent to gain the ridge and then hiked north toward the south side approach.
Once on the ridge, the hike turned into a relentless and painful bushwhack through Gamble Oak. The bushwhack was the worst part of the entire day, and while I was wearing a long sleeve shirt, I still ended up with bloody arms. Eventually I made it to a short little climb where someone has left a rope for support. This was as far as I could get Lola as I had no way to lift her up high enough to get over that vertical section. I left her there and she stays where told pretty well. I made the little climb and then made my way up and around a couple more scramble sections until I had a clear view of the last few hundred feet of scrambling to reach the summit. At this point I decided to call it a day and return to Lola as she is much more important to me than reaching a summit.
When I returned to the area where the rope is, Lola was relaxing in a shaded spot. I now know what's left for me to do to reach the upper section and will return without Lola when I do it. On the return hike and once we were off the ridge I decided to hike the sandy roads back to my ride. It was longer and the sand was like walking on a dry beach, but there were no seeds to fight. |
