Ascent Trip Report

West Slope directly up to the summit, leaving the trail at the start of Spooky Meadow. Phenomental views from the top but cannot say I'd recommend this route.

Ascending from Spooky Meadow, once you get past the 800 feet of scree, the rock up above it (on our appraoch, at least) is complete crap. Half of what you grab at breaks off, everything beneath you slides. A few short sections of solid granite near the top redeemed the route and were a short bit of enjoyable easy scrambling. Before this, we had considered bailing off our direct approach just because of how sketchy things were becoming, despite the seemingly doable slope (this was in large part, I should add, due to a dusting of snow overnight that covered just about every useful ledge we could use). Mostly class 2, there were some options for class 3 but instead of being fun, they were all sketchy because of the dusting of snow and the extremely crappy rock quality.

Perhaps a spot further south up the west slope might be of a different rock quality, but both our direct ascent and our descent further to the south were unpleasantly crappy. Day was cold and very windy. Views from the top and on the way up the west slope were absolutely phenomenal and made it all worth it.
