Ascent Trip ReportRound Mountain (or Round Top Mountain, depending on which map you're looking at) would be my only hike of the morning before having to return to Baton Rouge. I bagged it after picking up a few of the roadside "peaks" west of Queen Wilhelmina SP in the early morning fog. I arrived at the Round Mountain TH (34.63832, -94.25796) at 8:37am, which is located on the southeast corner of the roadside vista marked Round Mountain Vista. Dennis Stewart's 2016-01-31 ascent documents this as well as the TH location. I used his trip report as my main source for researching this ascent. Thanks, Dennis!
I departed the vehicle at 8:37am and overall the hike is straightforward using the existing trail until the trail reaches the base of the peak where I jumped off (around 34.62967, -94.25303) for the final bushwhack to the summit. From here I proceeded directly up the northwest slope reaching the peak at 9:10am. Total time up was 37 minutes. The veg and short trees can get a bit annoying between the repeated ducking, arm scratching, and occasional spider web to the face. But otherwise no issues to report. I did come across some bear scat on the bushwhack up so there are some large mammals in the area. On the summit there is a rock outcrop about 40 feet in length that straddles the summit under the tree cover. Not much of a view to report from this location.
My return trek was much the same as the ascent, albeit I chose a slightly different descent angle to the east to return to the main trail. While making my descent I came across a random cairn at 34.62967, -94.25126 that sat above a short stretch of old trail demarcated by stones along one side. It was mostly overgrown by small trees but it appears that at one time there was a path to get up here. Continuing on I soon picked up the main trail and was back at the vehicle at 9:38am. Time down was about 28 minutes. My trip distance was 1.9 miles roundtrip with a total elevation gain of 237 feet.
