Ascent Trip ReportOK - I have looked at this peak for some time and did not know how to get it. There is little good info but if you go to 14ers.com there is an excellent route description for this hike using Pika Trail a new public parking area and trail built by a mountain outdoor trust for us! and that route up is quite well marked and cairned to the tundra. The parking lot is accessed from Hermit Court also called Prune Court on some maps. The parking lot is well signed and accommodates at least 8 cars. Nicely done!
We passed a guy coming down and inquired about a trail we saw up near the saddle past the trust trails and he said it went to another public parking area off of Mountain View Drive. That parking area accommodates say 5 cars and there were cars there. Nobody parked at the Pika TH today. The Pika route is a little longer and starts about 200 feet lower on the mountain with a little more hike through the sub-alpine. The route off of Mountain View avoids some sub-alpine and gets you there quicker.
The route is easy class 1 for most of the way and it is a good beginners hike for alpine hiking and getting something above 13,000 feet. It looks to be a safe route for winter snow-shoes.
My GPS track did not record the first part of our hike so it is off by out 0.4 miles and some vertical. I would say if you bypass the subpeaks and false peaks you are looking at around 5.5 miles RT and 1500 feet of gain. If you go tag it all and stay on the ridge you may record over 6 miles round trip and over 1600 feet of gain for the day.
On the way down I saw my first ermine ever dancing in the talus. It stood up like a really skinny prairie dog but had a weasel face and the characteristic black tip tail. A special siting !
