Ascent Trip ReportI initially learned a great deal about trail conditions for this peak via the excellent write up that Stav Basis provides on his StavIsLost page (https://www.stavislost.com/hikes/trail/caney-creek-and-buckeye-mountain-loop). Thanks, Stav! He documents the full Caney Creek loop that includes this peak if you are so inclined to make that roughly 9 mile journey. I was at a time disadvantage, having just driven up from Baton Rouge and wanting to bag at least a couple more peaks before heading to Queen Wilhelmina for the night. So I opted to simply bag the peak in the most direct way possible, directly up the Buckeye Mtn Tr.
I arrived at the trailhead (34.40893, -94.02820) around 1:05pm and began heading up shortly after at 1:10pm. Overall the hike was easy, initially in the shade of the trees until breaking out along the ridgeline, where the shade becomes sporadic, for an approach up the peak's eastern slope. I should mention that as the trail breaks out onto the ridge it becomes much more like a game trail than a maintained hiking path. I recommend keeping your eyes on it else a couple seconds of looking away could find yourself off trail, especially where the veg gets thicker. There is a nice vista looking to the south near 34.40577, -94.03508.
At the top I noted the highpoint was probably closer to ca. 34.40586, -94.03632. I made the peak in 29 minutes, stopping here and there to enjoy my surroundings. The return was made in 21 minutes, which got me back to the vehicle at 2:04pm. Overall elevation gain was recorded to be 484 feet from the TH, not accounting for the areas along the early sections of trail where the trail descends to well below the elevation of the TH. Once back in the vehicle I headed over to Tall Peak for the next hike of the afternoon...
