Ascent Trip Report

Bobby (K0XI), Evan (NS8X), Scott and I (N9DK) made this trip for a ham radio SOTA (summits on the air) activation:

We recommend staying near Hell Hole Reservoir, such as Big Meadows. Hell Hole campground has standing water and we suspected mosquitoes. Big Meadows has running water and one flush facility!

Hiking from the main road is a very long trip. Bobby contributed a 4WD FJ Cruiser. We had a winch and chainsaw that ended up not being used. The road goes quickly from pavement to pot holes to gravel to very rough.

Near the end, the cal topo map was incorrect regarding the road. We turned right where the road ran out, crossed a small bridge and made it to the actual trail head. The trail head is a little before the end of the road.

At the start of the hiking trail, we left the car. The trail was usually easy to follow, except in certain places the downfall was large and scattered. Circumventing was random but we usually found the trail on the other side. It sort of follows the cal topo trail. The peak bagger app helped us guess where we should be and was very helpful on the hike down. The GPS track includes the 4WD part to illustrate how it compares to cal topo.

Along the ridge there were small parts that required scrambling. No technical climbs and one can probably avoid the scrambles by hiking around. The top was clear all the way around, nice places to sit and eat lunch.

The weather was great. We successfully activated (SOTA) the summit.
