Ascent Trip Report

See TR for Crestone Peak for information generally about the drive up and hiking etc....this report is ONLY to supply information for the county HP climb of the adjacent subpeak. So looking at Crestone East from Crestone - truthfully I was not thrilled. It looks daunting as a class 3 with a lot of exposure and a horrible gully. There are nice hard rock ribs that look easier but they are quite a downclimb to get to. Some rock climbers encouraged me to go check out the gully because they often look far steeper head on than they are in person. This is the case with this peak.

So hike down to the obvious red saddle. Enter the gully. The rock is pretty stable and the scree is not too bad (far easier than say Sneffles or Challenger) Hug the left wall as there area a lot of excellent hand holds and the gully is not as steep as it looks. This ends up mostly class 2 with some patches of class 2+. Before the gully ends climb the wall onto the slab that looked very steep from Crestone but again is much tamer than one expects and solid. Take the slab up to the obvious class 3 rock near the top and it is straight forward and not very exposed. Soon you will be on top. The amount of class 3 minimal and I do not know why some say this peak is harder climbing than Crestone. I found it to be no harder about the same. It just looks bad from a distance.
