Ascent Trip Report

Access: Do not use Google Maps to access Grizzly Mountain, as it will try to take you down long-defunct logging roads that are completely impassible. From Coeur D'Alene River Rd, turn onto Beetle Creek Rd, which should have a sign for the Fern Falls and Shadow Falls trailhead. Follow Beetle Creek Road to a signed Y-junction. To the left is the trailhead for Fern Falls and Shadow Falls, which I highly recommend visiting if you have the time, as they are quite scenic. To get to Grizzly Mountain, take the right fork, which is signed as Junction 400. Eventually you will reach a 5-way intersection, where you will take a left onto NF-260. Follow this road, keeping right at another Y-junction, until you reach a berm in the road. At the time of our visit, a sedan could make it to within a mile or two of the berm if driven carefully. Rainy conditions the prior week made the final stretch quite rutted, so a sedan may fair better in dry conditions.

The Climb: An ATV road goes around to the left of the berm. Take this road all the way to the saddle between the two summits of Grizzly Mountain, passing a burned area early on. Upon reaching the saddle, a more primitive ATV trail heads off to the east summit, which is the higher of the two. There is a 6-foot cairn on the summit, but no register. Someone also seems to have stole the benchmark.

My Thoughts: Access is pretty lengthy for such a short hike, so I would only recommend this peak if you are into P2ks. Thankfully, much of the hike is above the trees, so views are good most of the way. We also spotted some pretty interesting cliffs and rock formations along the way.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
