Ascent Trip Report

Trying to complete my list of peaks in and around the great Moosehead Lake (the biggest lake in Maine) and one of the largest lakes in the US east of the Mississippi that is all in one state boundary. I scouted this out the day before and althought there is some snow mobile routes up the mountain, to be sure i did not tresspass i elected to do this as a gravel road hike all the way to the top since there is a road to the top. To add extra vertical i was dropped off on a small gravel road accross from Main Street down by the lake.

Took Horizons West Rd (private gravel) to Big Hill Road (private gravel) serving secluded housing along Moosehead Lake and hiked up to Schoals Rd (public gravel); went a few hundred feet down Main Street and then found the meandering and very steep gravel road called Scammon Ridge Road and hiked it to the top. I checked out several lots for sale around the top to ensure the summit but the subalpine vegetation, dwarfed conifers, lichen, moss, and flat slabes of stone confirmed the true peak.

Estimate 5 small saddles from 5 to 10 feet deep on the way up (assume 30 feet gain up and 30 feet down) plus some additional hiking to confirm summit.

I walked along Main St to Greenville and Karen picked me up.
It was rainy. I chose this as my last training hike at the lodge for the summer as it had nice views, was easy to do in an hour while family shopped in Greenville, and i had not done the HP. Walked the ascent quickly and jogged the descent.
Coolected rocks from road cuts along way. Shale, slate, sandstone.
