Ascent Trip ReportIf you are relying on other reports that start at the intersection of NC 18 and the Blue Ridge Parkway, be aware that NC 18 crosses the parkway twice. From the southern crossing (Wilkesboro/Laurel Springs exit) near milepost 249, take NC 18 north through Laurel Springs toward Sparta. After several miles, turn left on Doughton Mtn Road and go 1.6 miles to the gap, then turn R on gravel road and follow about 1.5 miles to the summit. This road is maintained by Skyline Telephone Co-op and is marked 4WD only. Indeed, it was too steep for my front-wheel drive Saturn, and I hiked the road. Most of the route goes through a Christmas tree farm. Past the western knob, the roadside was covered with wildflowers and at least six varieties of butterflies. There are three summits, with towers on the western and central summits. The HP is just beyond an electrified cattle fence on the middle knob. Climb over the gate and go to a small outcropping that has a relatively new brass survey marker (not a BM) engraved 4162.5, which I assume is the calibrated elevation.
