Ascent Trip Report

Hiked up the route described by Roach from Winfield. The left turn up the 4wd road is easy to spot. It’s up
Past the initial steep part that thwarts many vehicles. The road is rough even to walk on. Only legit high clearance vehicles should attempt this road. I tried to stay on the uphill side of the road as much as possible to avoid the golf, baseball and softball sized rocks that really become bothersome. At the upper hairpin where the descent gully meets the road I encountered four men who decided to bail off the upper switchbacks because they said the road had been washed out by scree and was unsafe for them. To me it looked fine from across the valley but who am I to argue about what I haven’t seen so I continued to see what all the fuss was about. I thought the switch backs were fine and there was a small section of loose steep scree to cross but was just fine. A few stomps and I was through it. I’m not sure what freaked those guys out. Anyway the trail/road is totally fine. Arrived at the saddle where the 12r is almost a flat walk over. Easy. Then ascended up a herd path toward the ridge on the right up Middle Mntn. A little steep and loose but fine. Passing over the summit with just a brief break and moved on easily to UN13462 where I found a big fat marijuana bud in the summit register. Thanks previous hiker, I’ll have at it later. On to Brown’s went easily as well. Took a long break at the top with good cell service and nice views of Huron. Descended back to the saddle before descending down into the upper bowl on grass. Stayed high right almost to Middle before descending down the gully to the road. I contemplated going back over to the top of the switchback and heading down that way and probably just should have done that. If I have to do it again I’ll descend that way. The gully was steep and the last bit to the bottom is loose and unpleasant. Descended back down the road where a big pickup truck passed
Me on the way down with no offer of a ride. Thanks. Got back to the van in decent time however. Good hike great views. 9.8mi 3560ft.
