Ascent Trip Report

Access: Shafer Butte is the centerpiece of the Bogus Basin Ski Resort, so there are paved roads all the way to the trailhead. Google maps will also take you there (you will have to park at the end of North Bogus Basin Road).

The Climb: There are several trails that will get you up to the summit. From the parking lot, I went across the old tennis courts and up the service road to the north. You can take this service road to another service road that goes up to the summit. Instead, I took the signed Tempest Trail, which leaves the service road on the west side of the mountain. The Tempest Trail takes you to the ski lift and a road will take you to the summit from there.

My Thoughts: I visited on Labor Day weekend, so there were a lot of hikers and bikers on the mountain. I would have preferred a bit more peace and quiet, but it was still a pleasant hike. A ski lift gets within about 20 vertical feet of the summit, so bagging this while skiing is also an option.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
