Ascent Trip Report

Awoke family at 4:30 AM so we could leave the cabins at Moose Inn just outside the park and drive to the gate by 5 AM when it opened. We were latte at 5:10 and 5 cars ahead of us in line but luckily it was a TH morning. Drove to TH at Roaring Brook Campground and found TH and began.

The trail up is steep of course like all up this great mastiff but this was less technical in terms of scrambling then the fun AT Hunt Trail we did last year from the Katahdin Stream Campground.

Reaching Pamola was not difficult and the entire family made albeit Sarah and Karen needed more stops and time than Danny and I. I was proud that my daughter got over her teenager doubt and got into the groove and made the ascent.

The top of Pamola is beautiful and there are wonderful views of South Peak, Baxter Peak and Hamlin Peak. Lots of people at the top ready to do the Knife Edge. The view of the Knife Edge from this peak is the best view and panarama anywhere on the entire massif my opinon.

The next part of the trip is the beginning of the legendary Knife Edge and that day a film crew from a Portland TV station had a bad accident behind us and a 2 helicopters were dispached to take the hurt from a 12 foot fall that split his face open badly and damaged some other limbs.

The best part of the Knife Edge and the most interesting scrambling is this first segment to the Chimney Peak. The moves are fairly difficult class 3 and in places class 4. The route marked keeps the moves nearly all class 3 but some still are upper 3 moves and ver fun. Straying off of the marked path and it becomes class 4.
