Ascent Trip ReportNot living in Vermont anymore is making the VT County High Point quest take a little longer than originally anticipated...
My (now) wife and I did Butterfield a couple of years ago, but bugged out before doing Signal since we had to make it back to Chittenden County for dinner. This time around we followed the same road up (302C) and started bushwhacking after the bridge/bend in between Butterfield and Signal.
The bushwhack had a few steep and thick sections, but overall was pretty nice. We managed to stick to to the slightly ridgier section on the way up, but I'm not really sure it was worth it, honestly you should probably just point up and keeping climbing. Some of the plant life was pretty thick since it was the end of summer, which definitely had me daydreaming about doing this as a snowshoe, but it was quite doable. The top was pretty much as expected: a little lump of land with a dangling summit register situated in a pretty forest with a bit of breeze but no views. I'm shocked that we didn't stumble across more wildlife, but there were plenty of beds and animal poop everywhere, so your mileage may vary.
This hike ended up taking us quite a while because there are tons of blackberry, raspberry and thimbleberry bushes along the road and we loaded up on enough of them for a pretty impressive crisp! We ended up doing 8ish miles RT with somewhere upwards of 1500 feet of gain.
