Ascent Trip ReportThe ticket booth doesn't open until 8 am, but I wanted to beat the crowd. There is no gate, you can drive past it. I left Idaho Springs (7521') at 7 am and got to the booth about 7:30 and had the road to myself. From the booth, at 10,726', it's 9 miles to Summit Lake and 14 miles to the summit. Even though I drove it and not climbed it, even the drive is fairly adventurous. More unprotected than driving up Pikes Peak. Took 1-1/4 hours with stops and picture taking.
A herd of about 30 mountain goats around the summit parking lot were quite willing to pose for pictures. Included families with babies.
The climb of the last 134 feet is a pretty good slope. It was fairly windy on top and I was glad I had my winter coat and ski hat. Having gotten there so early, there were only about 10 people on the peak.
There's an extra bonus of an Astronomical Observatory on the peak (not open for use).
I was back down at the entrance at about 10:30 and there was about 50 cars in line to pay to get in. I was glad I went early. |
