Ascent Trip Report

Was hoping to do Mt. Hood in Oregon, but conditions were not good there (too much falling rock), so my nephew suggested Shasta instead. Let's do it.

Fri morning I picked up a rental car in San Fran, picked up my Taylor and headed to Shasta. We stopped at The Fifth Season in town to pick up mountaineering boots and crampons for him. Word was they were highly recommended - which was a good recommendation. We stayed at the Monte Bianco Inn and ate an early dinner at Mike and Tony's across the street (I recommend the chicken parm).

Our plan was to wake at 3:30 am, so it was an early bedtime at 7pm Fri night.

03:30 - Wakeup. Quickly boiled some hot water and made oatmeal. Packed a few remaining items and tossed everything in the car.
03:55 - Depart the Monte Bianco Inn for the Bunny Flat trailhead
04:10 - Arrive the Bunny Flat trailhead and grabbed the first parking spot. Not many other cars in the parking lot. We grabbed our Wilderness summit passes (10,000+ pass was $25, wilderness pass was free) the day before at The Fifth Season.
04:20 - Start from Bunny Flat trailhead
05:00 - Horse Camp (still dark)
07:15 - Helen lake
09:40 - Top of Red Banks @ Thumb Rock
10:50 - Top of Misery Hill
11:20 - Summit, eat lunch, take pics, enjoy the views
12:00 - Depart Summit
14:30 - Horse camp
14:46 - Bump into Toby Evans - a friend of mine
15:04 - Back at Bunny Flat trailhead

Note: If you look closely at my GPX track, you'll see we went around Red Banks on the ascent, then descended the gap on the return.
