Ascent Trip Report

I have been looking at these three bare rock peaks for years driving to Fairplay and behind the high school. There are bare because of a fire that exposed their shoulders. The scrambling at the top looks daunting. We headed up bushwhacking behind the High School and summitted the small peak behind the HS. Then we contoured around a ravine and started heading up. This hike is way harder than it looks. The fire stimulated tall grasses, shrubs, and small trees and there is a lot of downfall along the way.

Finally getting to some climbable rock we worked a few nice class 3 slabs until Dan found a steep chute that was class 3+ to 4. I stared up it and the rock kept breaking away so I slid over to some solid class 3 rock but Dan still wanted this more difficult route. I told him to abandon it as I watched him pick away rock after rock trying to get to solid rock. Then he slid over to some chunky rock that looked better set his 4 points and then when he pulled a huge rock came loose and slid between his legs. I made Dan get out of there and we stayed on solid rock the rest of the way mostly 2+ and some 3. the final summit has several options from 2+ up to 3+.
