Ascent Trip Report

Grabbed this mountain as part of a much larger trip that focused on Colorado and New Mexico. Left my hotel in Las Vegas, NM at 5:15 AM MDT, arrived at Black Mesa around 8:45 MDT after a stop for gas and breakfast in Clayton, NM. Made my way up and down pretty quickly to try and get back to my car before it got too hot. One car was in the parking lot when I arrived, another pulled in as I was signing the log. I only passed one person on my way up, passed several on my way down.

The trail up the mountain is wide and well-defined with plenty of signs to make sure you're on the right track. Benches are located every mile. Trail is generally flat outside of a ~3/4 mile section between Mile 2.25 and Mile 3.25 that contains most of the ascent. Summit is marked by an obelisk, State of Oklahoma benchmark, and Oklahoma state flag. An ammo box containing a log is chained to the north side of the obelisk. A short herd path extends south from the obelisk to the edge of the mesa to a great view of the surrounding plains and mesas.

Overall, a very unique hike that is worth a detour for highpointers and non-highpointers alike. Bring lots of water and sunscreen. Cell phone reception is minimal to non-existent.
