Ascent Trip ReportAwesome hike!!! Lots of information out there for Horseshoe Meadows in and Portal out routes, so I won't repeat it.
We camped 2 miles south of Rock Creek, at Whitney Creek, and at the field with 2 tairns (or tarns in the US) above Guitar Lake on our 3 nights. (Elevations of 11,000 10,300 and 11,700) That made for days of approx 10, 9, and 4 miles before summit on day 4 (4 miles up and 9.9 down). If I could plan it again, I would have split the first two days into three, and kept the short day prior to the summit for rest and a nighttime start in the morning. That said, if your time is limited liek ours was, 3 nights was adequate for acclimation for a group that lives at sea level. Not to say it was easy, (resting heart rate at night before bed was in the upper 70s, when it's normally in mid 50s at sea level)-- just that we didn't have AMS issues with what we did. |
