Ascent Trip Report

Independance Day hike up to the Kelly Butte lookout tower: awesome!

We arrived at the trailhead a little before noon and found the parking area mostly full (there's only room for 10 or so vehicles), but there were still a couple of spaces available. Walked up the gentle grade of the remainder of the road beyond the gate to where the *real* trail begins, and then it was up, up, and away!

The trail is in great shape; no obstacles. Lots of wildflowers, and fantastic views pretty much all the way up. The lookout tower was staffed by a couple of volunteers, and so the structure was open to the public. We had lunch on the rocks below the tower with an outstanding view of Mount Rainier and the surrounding forest. Totals: 3.8 miles, 1150 ft elevation gain, about 3.5 hours (going slowly and stopping for photos, lunch, etc.).
