Ascent Trip ReportDuring our Oregon Coast vacation Jake, Shelby, and I got up at 7:00 am to do this easy morning hike. We parked just down from the gate at the end of Sal la Sea Drive - there's about enough room for 4-5 cars in this area, but we were the only ones there at 7:30 am. The trail is very good, but a little overgrown in a couple places. We had to push through some vines blocking the trail a couple times, but I wouldn't really call it bushwhacking - I've been through 1000x worse! The scenery is beautiful and the views from the top are great!
I'd read lots of stories of rescues and such on God's Thumb, so I was not sure what to expect... but it's a VERY easy hike. Anyone with common sense and in decent shape will have no problem following the trail or climbing to the top. We did it in 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. The ridge just before God's Thumb is the only place with a TINY bit of exposure (if you can even call it that). It's a little steep going up the Thumb, but footing is really good compared to most places I've been. Don't let the horror stories scare you, this one is very easy even for kids - just keep them away from the edges if they are not used to high places! Jake (9 years old) had a great time and needed no help.
