Ascent Trip Report

Friday - Fly BOS to SLC (flight is delayed 1.5 hrs), and arrive SLC after midnight. Plan is to sleep to whenever on Sat and then drive to Henry's fork campground in the afternoon, so no worry.

Saturday - Head to REI in SLC and pick up supplies (Gas canister, bars, shot blocks) and then drive to Henry's Fork campground (~3+ hrs). I arrive around 6:00pm. On the drive in I notice a few helicopters flying around - "that's cool I think". Turns out there was a very strong thunderstorm from 2-4pm and there was a lightning strike on the summit of King's Peak that effected 5 people. They were all airlifted off the mountain, but according to the USFS ranger on Sunday, they were all fine. The parking lot was fairly empty (less than 50% full), so I chose the flattest spot to park and set up my rental car (mini-van). I spoke to a few people coming off the trail that said there was no significant snow or anything to worry about. I also saw a few people head up the trail planning to hike a few hours and camp by the lake. My plan was to sleep in the car till 4am and hit the trail by 4:30am. So, Tylenol/PM and asleep by 7.

Sunday - Woke at 4am. I couldn't get my JetBoil to light, so I skipped the oatmeal and had 2 bars for breakfast. I was on the trail at 4:33am.

04:35 - Depart Henry's Fork Campground Trailhead
06:00 - Twilight, don't need the headlamp anymore
06:13 - Bear lake / Horse Ford trail intersection/sign + cross the foot bridge over the river
07:09 - Henry's fork lake trail intersection/sign
09:49 - Kings Peak Summit. Spend ~10 mins on the summit taking pics and snaking, then head back down.
11:22 - Gunsight pass
11:32 - Bottom of rockfall @ Gunsight Pass (took the direct route down instead of the switchbacks)
12:58 - Stream crossing/bridge. I stopped right after the bridge and ate lunch (subway) for ~20 mins.
14:44 - Done. Back in the parking lot.
