Ascent Trip Report

Another day off and another DVNP peak. Jessica Patrick, one of my NPS volunteer colleagues, had done Perry a couple of weeks earlier and had failed to bring back a picture of the USGS summit disc. I had teased her about that, so in no small part I took on this peak to get a picture of said disc. Drove to Dantes View in the early AM and set out along the very clear and obvious use trail. The trail goes up and down, and up and down, and up and down the ridge line for four miles and as noted is very clear and obvious, that is until the last 3/4 of a mile before the summit, which then requires some easy scrambling . . . my hands touching rock maybe three or four times, mostly as a concession to my aging knees. Got to the summit and after walking around for a solid twenty minutes was unable to find a USGS disc anywhere. Hard to believe there would be a named peak in a national park without a summit disc, but as it would turn out Perry would only be the first of several such peaks I encountered in Death Valley.
