Ascent Trip ReportWhile normally I do most ascents solo, I decided to join Soy tours for an overnight group tour for this one. The cost of the trip was $40, which included pickup from the hostel in Antigua, 3 meals, tent accommodation, and drop off. We were a group of 9 people, and we started at the trailhead at 2400m at around 10am. The route up to the camping areas (there are many tour groups) was simple enough, and we camped at about 3500m. The sites all look over at Fuego volcano, and this is why you must do this climb over 2 days: the views of this constantly erupting volcano are simply fantastic! We woke up at 4am to summit (1hr), where i did a quick circuit of the crater at sunrise. With Fuego still spewing lava, it was some sight. Back in camp by 7am (gravel sliding down), we had breakfast and were back at the trailhead by 10. You can go much quicker alone of course, but this volcano is truly about the views! Highly recommended |
