Ascent Trip ReportNational Summit Day, which appears to be an American thing, was yesterday (Sat., Aug. 3/19), but because the weather forecast for Mt. Carleton Provincial Park was not favourable (high winds and heavy rain...some areas also got hail), I decided to delay my trip up to the park until Sunday. This is also a long weekend, as Monday is New Brunswick Day. It was a sun & clouds day and cool at the exposed summits, but fine for hiking solo. I decided to aim for bagging Mt. Sagamook and Mt. Head, and left open the option of also doing Mt. Carleton.
From the Mt. Sagamook trail head, I set out at 0942 hrs, took the eastern route and summitted at 1110 hrs. After gabbing with a nice couple from the Scoudouc area, I set out at 1155 hrs on the 1.8 km saddleback to Mt. Head, summitting the second peak at 1245 hrs. After some water, a snack and some pics, I decided to leave Mt. Carleton for another day. I set out at 1313 hrs and after chatting for 10 minutes enroute with another hiker from Fredericton, arrived at Mt. Sagamook's summit again at 1430 hrs. Took the same longer 3.5 km trail back down, arriving at the car park at 1557 hrs. |
